Perhaps the densest dessert ever concocted by man, gibanica - more specifically Prekmurska gibanica - is also one of the tastiest. Consisting of layer after layer of poppy seeds, walnuts, apples, raisins and cottage cheese fillings separated by flaky dough, the cake has been served on special occasions in the Prekmurje region of Slovenia for centuries, and has also achieved the status of a national speciality. If you can't make it to Prekmurje to sample the most authentic stuff, you should be able to get some at any of the traditional Slovene restaurants in Ljubljana.
