Despite essentially being the same company since 2005, the choice between Union and Laško is still a subject of seemingly endless debate. Laško Club was the one I used to enjoy after a long day's work during the 3 years I spent living in Ljubljana. Throw in some Ćevapčići and some English-language rubbish on Pop TV or Kanal A and you've got yourself a half-decent night in.

I voted for the Human Fish Brewery's Pale Ale, being easily the tastiest beer produced in Slovenia despite only being a couple of years old.The two big brews are fairly hopeless - - Union just shades it over Laško after the latter's disastrous recipe change. A hangover after two pints? No, thanks.
Human Fish is one of the only breweries in Slovenija with the balls to make real beer. The others make mostly bland, mass market, industrial lager meant to have the widest possible appeal through not actually having any flavor to offend anyone. The result is goat piss.If you want to try a real, locally crafted beer give Human Fish a try. And no, I don't work there. Just love there beer whenever I visit Ljubljana.
