Vinag

One of the largest classical wine cellars in Central Europe is located in, or rather under, the heart of Maribor. Comprised of over 2km of tunnels covering some 20,000m² and containing nearly 6 million litres of wine, the place might be too much for some wine-lovers to handle. Dating back to 1836, the cellar began to grow in size and importance with the completion of the Vienna-Trieste railway five years later. Following World War Two the premises became part of a local cooperative, and were expanded and modernised in the years that followed, before being taken over by Vinag in 1960. Nowadays, a modern wine shop and tasting rooms sit on top of the vast underground network, with more than enough varieties to keep you busy for several hours. Group tastings and visits to the wine cellar can be arranged with prior notice.
