Hundreds of years ago, salt wasa commodity almost as valuable as gold and rulers fought to acquire and controlits means of collection. Sečovlje was one such rarified area and today it is preserved as a park with a visitors' center and museum. A fascinating piece of history, the salt pans are not only an interesting public park, they are also awell-preserved natural habitat for birds. The trek out to the pans is an interesting one but make sure to pack your insect repellant, not all of the inhabitants here are friendly.
