Johannesburg has had a sizeable and vibrant Chinese community since the city was founded. The first Chinese settlers came to the city as cheap labour for mining companies and the first Chinatown settled along Commissioner Street in the late 19th-Century. Nowadays Chinese Joburgers live and work across the city, and particularly in the New Chinatown along Derrick Avenue, in Cyrildene. Most people still maintain many of the cultural traditions of the old country and Chinese New Year in particular is celebrated at both sites in extravagant style.
