Estonian History Museum - Great Guild Hall

  Pikk 17 ,   Old Town          +372 696 86 90     05 Mar 2024

The Great Guild Hall built 1407 - 1410, was significant as the home of Tallinn's union of wealthy merchants and is a sight worth visiting in its own right as one of the best preserved medieval buildings in Old Town. As part of the renovations, several formal rooms and cellars have now been opened to the public for the first time. There is a temporary exhibition 'Why is Estonia not a kingdom?' which challenges to answer the question with the representations of top four researchers on the area. Open till March 31, 2025.
In the cellar one can have an overview of the Guild Hall´s history, can find a Treasury and historical Weapons Chamber. The permanent exhibition 'The Chamber of Legends' in the cellar has been recently updated, introducing a selection of rare artefacts associated with extraordinary legends on the underground floor of the building. A total of 88 rarities are on display, some of which are being revealed to the public for the first time.
A temporary exhibition 'Ülo Sooster: Prison and Love' opens at the Estonian History Museum’s Great Guild Hall on March 8th and runs until June 22nd, 2024, accompanied by guided tours and lecture programmes. Ülo Ilmar Sooster (1924–1970) is celebrated as one of the most prominent representatives of Estonian and Soviet modernism. This exhibition marks the centenary of the artist’s birth and serves as the inaugural event in a series dedicated to his memory.
Next to the museum, follow the Börsi Passage where Estonia's history is set in the stone path (when it's not covered in snow), from the pre-history, through the present-day.
