National holidays

There are a number of public holidays in the Netherlands. On these days shops, museums and attractions often close earlier and some stay closed the whole day.
Schools, city councils, post offices and banks are closed and some shops and restaurants may also close. Those still open will have abbreviated opening hours.
It's also worth saying that the Easter holidays and subsequent Pentecostal holidays are popular times for Dutch families (and those from many other European countries) to travel, so if you're plans include a road trip to several destinations, be prepared for plenty of fellow drivers and book your accommodation in advance. Queen's Day on 30 April is a big celebration in all of the Netherlands and the night before even bigger in Tilburg. Sinterklaas on 5 December is also a typical feast day when everyone celebrates at home. There are a few regional variations with carnavallen (carnival) celebrated in February and March in Catholic areas. Of course, Budget Day also has its charms! The date is followed by the name of the holiday in English and the Dutch name appears in parentheses just after that.
