Bernardine Church & Monastery

  Maironio 10      (+370) 61 60 11 59     more than a year ago

Constructed on the site of an earlier wooden church dating from the middle of the 15th century, the current vast Gothic building with Baroque and Renaissance additions dates from the early part of the 16th century onwards. Ransacked during the Soviet occupation, the building was returned to its rightful owners soon after independence after which a mammoth restoration project began that continues to this day. Highlights include 14 magnificent Rococo altars and the oldest known crucifix in the country, dating from the 15th century. The neighbouring monastery now houses the Vilnius Art Academy.
