Kazys Varnelis House-Museum

  Didžioji 26      (+370) 52 79 16 44     more than a year ago

The amazing thing about this museum is the juxtaposition between the centuries-old antiques and the dizzying abstract patterns of paintings by Kazys Varnelis (1917-2010) who escaped Lithuania in the 1940s and earned moderate fame and fortune in the United States. Varnelis returned to Lithuania in 1998 and brought his immense collection with him.

Varnelis arrived at United States in 1948 (not 1949) and I think everybody who was constrained to move from Lithuania in the end of WWII because soviets would say that he or she did not escape but was expellee. Exile is not escaping...

This is an absolutely wonderful museum one of the high points of our recent visit to Vilmius.
