Balashi Brewery & Beer Garden

  Balashi 62, Santa Cruz      (+297) 597 6610     more than a year ago
At first glance this place might look like an upmarket cafeteria, but you should give this Aruban version of a beer garden a chance to impress you. In our opinion it's one of the better, and cheaper, places to go for a tasty, but casual lunch, especially if you're on your way to Baby Beach. The grilled chicken wraps and tuna sandwiches are among the best on the island and the huge portions come with big loads of fries, the way we like it. Don't be surprised if it gets crowded at midday, as the venue is also the break room for the employees of the beer brewery. The breawy is a full-scale production brewery, one of the most modern breweries in the Caribbean.

The brewery produces a line-up of four distinctive beers, each inspired and influenced in one way or another by Aruba’s heritage and way of life. These well-loved local beers are Balashi, Chill, HopiBon and HopiStout. Curious to see just how the local beers are brewed? You can visit the brewery for a tour for $10. Tours can be booked on their website or by calling ahead.

I enjoy the Balashi beer and have a question about the beer garden. I understand there is (was?) a happy hour on Friday evenings as well as a catch of catch of the day. Since we will be arriving on a Friday that sounds like a nice relaxing and inexpensive first evening to kick off our stay. Is the happy hour still in effect? John Croes
