Olomouc

Local cheese

more than a year ago
One of the stinkiest cheeses with one of the most pungent tastes, Olomoucké Tvarůžky is a yellow cheese, a speciality of the region and not to be missed when visiting Olomouc. With the distinction of being the only original Czech cheese, this ripened soft product is made from skim cow’s milk and has almost no fat. While it was originally considered a peasant’s food, with regional village folk the only ones seemingly brave enough to eat it, legend has it that Emperor Rudolf II ate it too. The stamp of royalty. You may find the cheese included on some pub menus, often fried. For a sweet treat, visit Tvarůžková cukrárna at Denisova 13 for a variety of homemade sweet and savoury tvarůžky pastries.

If the cheese really overwhelms you (in a good way), you can visit the Museum of A.W. Olomoucké Tvarůžky. Here you’ll get an up-close look at the cheese’s history, production methods, watch films starring the cheese and of course, a shop. Tours last roughly an hour and the museum is located in Loštice, a less than 50 kilometre distance from Olomouc but one which requires a bus ride that can be about an hour and a half and involve a few changes. Ask at tourist Information for tips on how to easily get there.
