Visit the best preserved Roman village north of the Alps. Augusta Raurica was founded in the year 44BC - many original buildings can be seen, and archaeologists are slowly but constantly unearthing new ones. The most impressive part is the Roman Theatre which was completely restored in 2007. There is also an amphitheatre, parts of an aqueduct and more scattered around the present-day village Augst. So just stroll around and explore. Some of the more than 1.5 million artefacts are on display in the museum - most famously the huge silver treasure. Other highlights are the rebuilt Roman house and the animal park, where you can make contact with (real, live!) woolly pigs and goats, species of domestic animals the Romans themselves kept. To get there from Zurich, take a train to Rheinfelden and there change to the train to Kaiseraugst. (Duration 80 minutes, at least once an hour).
