Established in 1964, its first edition was held from 2 to 15 July at the Open-Air Theatre in Varna and is considered to be  the first professional international ballet competition in the world. On this occasion the world-famous French ballet master Serge Lifar said that “Varna Competition is a unique event in the history of ballet, an event of huge importance…”.Competition is open to ballet dancers of all nationalities, provided they comply with the requirements.
Almost all of the brightest stars of ballet art in the past 50 years have received their first recognition on the stage of Varna. Among them are names, such as: Vladimir Vassiliev, Ekaterina Maximova, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Natalia Makarova, Yoko Morishita, Patrick Dupond, Sylvie Guillem, Rolando Sarabia, Maximilliano Guerra, Krasimira Koldamova.
