Ba Pita

  70 Grant Ave, Norwood      +27 10 020 8363     more than a year ago
Those who spent many idle hours on Yeoville’s Rockey Street in the late 1980s and early 1990s will remember fondly the Middle Eastern restaurant Ba Pita. Founded by Gerald Elliott, the Ba Pita of old was the hangout of Joburg bohemians, anti-apartheid activists and other rebellious youth living in Yeoville at that pivotal time, who wouldn't be seen dead sipping cocktails with the captains of industry over at the Carlton Hotel.

The Ba Pita of old is but a memory of course, although in 2019 much to the delight of Joburgers Gerald Elliott returned to town and decided to open a new Ba Pita on Melville's 7th Street. Following the first lockdown in 2020 the restaurant then moved across town to Norwood's Factory on Grant, where it has now firmly established itself as an easy-going family favourite.

As the name suggests the food is Middle Eastern. They make their own pita breads and the juicy kebabs here are legendary. Arrive with a crowd and order lavish platters of Middle Eastern mezze. The food is excellent – so many different flavours and dishes to explore, that sharing is the best way to go. There's also a deli counter or your take home needs.

The restaurant interior is roomy enough to seat accommodate tables. But the killer app is seating in the pretty courtyard outside. Try the cocktails infused with Middle Eastern flavours. Book ahead of your visit. This place is perfect for a lazy weekend lunch.
