After two years of neutrality at the start of World War I, Romania entered the conflict on the side of the Entente in August 1916, declaring war on the Central Powers. The Romanian capital was subsequently bombed, for almost three months, in one of the first instances of concerted aerial bombardment being used as a weapon of war. More than 600 people were killed during the campaign, and following defeats of the Romanian army at Arges and Neajilov, Bucharest was occupied by Central forces (mainly German and Bulgarian) in December 1916. They would stay for almost two years, leaving in November 1918.

This exhibition is a survey of life in Bucharest under the occupation. Photos, paintings, documents and eyewitness accounts betray a time of suffering: food was in short supply, rationing strict and repression harsh.
