Top 5 Romanesque Churches

more than a year ago
Andorra is famous for its rich cultural and architectural heritage from the Romanesque ages, and especially for the numerous different churches, remaining from that epoch. Some of them which you can’t afford to miss are:
1. Sant Joan de Caselles Church – located in Canillo, this classic example of Andorran Romanesque churches dates back to a time between the 11th and the 12th century of Medieval Europe. It has all the typical features of the Romanesque architecture – it’s built entirely from stone and wood, with some amazing pictorial interior, including scenes representing the crucifixion.
2. Santa Coloma Church – located just outside Andorra la Vella, this is one of the oldest buildings on the territory of Andorra, which dates back to the 8th century. The frescos on the inside of the church are unfortunately not preserved in their original place, but they are currently virtually recreated with absolute accuracy by video mapping.
3. Nostra Senyora de Meritxell Church - the Sanctuary of Meritxell, located in Canillo is a unique phenomenon, which combines a Romanesque church architecture with some modern design and contemporary additions. The modern elements were added after a considerable part of the church was destroyed by a fire back in 1972.
4. Sant Esteve Church – this church is part of the historic center or the old town in Andorra la Vella. It was built back in the 12th century, but many changes and additions to it were made in the 20th century. Many of the remarkable paintings of this church are placed on display in the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya in Barcelona.
5. Santa Eulalia Church – located in the village of Encamp, this is another Romanesque gem on the territory of Andorra. It’s built back in the 11th century, and it has an impressive bell tower, which is the oldest preserved part of the place. Right next to the church you can visit The Museum of Sacred Art, which displays some interesting and valuable religious items.
