Visiting towns, making memories, buying souvenirs. This travel writing lark is a hard life, but someone must bite the bullet and do it, filling shelves with trinkets as we do. These are the souvenirs to pick up in the People’s Republic of Brighton & Hove.
Brighton Rock
It will do a real number on your dentures, but you don’t necessarily have to eat the stuff. No seaside form of rock is more famous than the Brighton variety, which comes in all sorts of colours and shapes and sizes. Yummy, boiled sugar sweets. Get a hilariously huge stick for full souvenir value.
A Copy of Brighton Rock
Much healthier than the sugar is ‘Brighton Rock’, the 1938 novel by Graham Greene. A murder thriller set in 1930s Brighton, the book is one of the country’s most famous piece of 20th century literature. Why not pick up a copy from the town itself?
Old Seaside Posters
As we mentioned in our work on the cities of Andalusia, we’re suckers for some old fashioned posters. The English seaside doesn’t escape our excitement, and you can find plenty of old style seaside advertisement posters around the city. Extra points for cherub-cheeked family snaps.
Brighton Gin
No longer confined to depressed housewives and the homeless, gin is experiencing something of a renaissance at the moment. Brighton Gin has won plenty of awards over the years and is the best form of booze to buy as a souvenir, although good luck avoiding opening the bottle.
George the Pavilion Cat
Not the real George, he’s buried in the Pavilion Gardens. You can get plenty of his merchandise though, from books to mugs and cuddly toys, the latter of which are particularly plush. The story goes that George just wandered into the gardens one day, becoming a royal cat in the process, living a life of luxury until his death at a positively ancient 20. Sort of like the actual royals then.
