Greek people are very religious, and Cretans do not make a difference. So, a significant number of the annual public events are linked with the dates Christian Orthodox church. One of the most celebrated is the Carnival that takes place 40 days before Easter. It happens in March depending on which day is Easter and at Sitia area, you will probably the best representation of the event.
Easter
The Orthodox Easter is usually one week after the Catholic Easter. Religious processions on the streets on Saturday night precede the Easter Sunday feast.
St. George’s Day
It is celebrated on the 23rd of April. The Feast of Ayios Yiorgios, St George, the patron saint of shepherds is one of the main events in the rural regions.
St Titus Day
Crete’s patron saint is celebrated on the 25th of August every year. The Feast of Ayios Titos happens all across the island, and the mass processions are primarily notable in Heraklion.
The Independence Day
Celebrated on 25th of March all across Greece – the day that started the Greek Revolution in 1821. Even if Crete was liberated from the Ottoman rule much later, it is an important day on the island too.
The “No” Day
28th of October is a Public Holiday celebrated throughout Greece to commemorate the response of the Greek government to request of Fascist Italy to surrender in 1940. The “Ochi” Day is a huge source of national pride.
Naval Week
In late Junе the festivities dedicated to the sea take place in Crete, more notably in the western part of the island. Souda Bay is the ideal location for the Naval Week where you can enjoy swimming, windsurfing, and boat races.
Renaissance Festival
The magnificent town of Rethymnon hosts the Renaissance Festival every year. It lasts for several weeks in August and September and includes international drama and music performances.
Wine Festivals
In Rethymnon, this festivity happens in the last two weeks of July. In Mid-August, anyway, Sitia Sultana Festival becomes a highly celebrated agenda.
Folk festivals
Houdetsi is the name of one of the prominent annual occasions dedicated to local music. It takes place in the little village of Houdetsi located 23 km due south of Heraklion at the beginning of August. Kornaria Festival that runs from mid-July to the end of August is another notable annual event including folk music.
