Bread & Beetroot

more than a year ago
As the warm weather returns, there are two cheap and readily available oddball dishes to look out for on a Lithuanian menu that are arguably best enjoyed on a terrace in the sunshine. Kepta duona and šaltibarščiai translate somewhat dishearteningly as fried bread and cold borsch respectively, but don’t let that put you off, because—well, order them and you’ll soon find out. Flavoured with garlic, best served with lots of cheese and tasting better than anything else in the world when accompanied with lashings of cold beer, kepta duona is unquestionably the country’s best kept secret. Šaltibarščiai, a cold beetroot soup enriched with kefir and hard-boiled eggs and served with a side dish of hot potatoes, is the pinkest food you’ll ever eat and can quickly become very addictive.
