Where to stay in Rosebank – hotels and short-stay apartment rentals

01 Nov 2023
Lying directly between Joburg’s City Centre and the newer Sandton Central Business District, Rosebank is one of Joburg's most popular neighbourhoods, for locals and visitors. It's busy, pedestrianised shopping precinct, and pavement cafés hum with a diverse crowd, while chic nightlife and dining destinations, as well as lifestyle developments such as Keyes Art Mile (known for its outstanding contemporary art galleries) and Park Corner on its border with Parkwood (with its happening restaurants and bars), attract a young, fashionable, and fun-loving crowd.

One of Joburg's most walkable neighbourhoods, Rosebank has (unusually for Joburg) been designed with people rather than cars in mind, and you can easily walk from one side of the district to the other in 10 minutes. It's quite a feat compared to the distances faced in many of Joburg's low-rise, strip mall-dominated northern suburbs. It's also a jacaranda destination, with the trees lining many of the main thoroughfares and making October in Rosebank an incredible sight to see – filled with purple blooms that mark out Joburg spring.

While we think that this is the best time to visit, there are no bad times to visit this fun neighbourhood, with its great coffee shops, restaurants, and hundreds of stores from which to choose anything from local fashion labels to cool international streetwear. This is also the home of the Rosebank Art and Craft Market, a daily African market that is a delight to browse, and the Rosebank Sunday Market, on the rooftop at the Rosebank Mall.

Being an attraction for business and leisure, there are plenty of lovely options for where to stay. So, whether you are after a city staycation or a serviced rental, a boutique hotel, or a budget-friendly spot, you'll find it here. All options we have listed are within walking distance of the Rosebank Gautrain station, which, if you are coming from out of town, means just a 20-minute ride from O.R. Tambo International Airport.

Here's our list of the district’s hotels and short-stay serviced rentals worth checking out.

54 ON BATH

Nestled in the leafy streets, the boutique-style 54 on Bath combines elegance and hospitality, equally appealing to business and leisure travellers. While many hotels are trimming niceties, this one is all about the extras, like complimentary pressing of three items daily, fresh flowers in your room, a pillow service, room snacks and espresso. For long stays – 10 nights or more – you'll even get a monogrammed dressing gown. Choose from 75 rooms and suites, each equipped with top-notch amenities. The Level Four restaurant and the Perrier-Jouët rooftop Champagne Bar are also big hit for visitors who fancy gourmet cuisine, and the spaces offer enchanting views over the neighbourhood. The hotel also offers a highly recommended afternoon High Tea

CLICO BOUTIQUE HOTEL

Situated a few doors away from Keyes Art Mile, the serene Clico Boutique Hotel stands out amidst Rosebank’s towering and contemporary architecture. With nine individually decorated rooms, this charming hotel is located in a picturesque Cape Dutch-style homestead. You'll find lush gardens, and rooms – with five-star amenities – that all have a view of the pool.  The hotel is named for the owner's favourite French Champagne, and  Clico restaurant is a lovely hideaway from the busy neighbourhood beyond the door. The menu includes a hand-picked selection of wines from acclaimed Western Cape vineyards and of course, fine French Champagne. The seasonal menus here cater to breakfast, lunch and dinner, and we always enjoy a meal here. The setting is slightly formal, and the dining area opens up onto the gardens. The private dining room is perfect for meetings over a meal. The al fresco option, named 400 Degrees, is set up in the sunlit terrace area and hosts a Hendricks Gin Bar and a state-of-the-art pizza oven serving up authentic Neapolitan-style pizza.

HOLIDAY INN JOHANNESBURG ROSEBANK

Formerly known as the Crown Plaza, the hotel has undergone extensive renovations in recent years, and redesigned its dining options, that include a standalone grill restaurant. The lobby is a good place to get some work done –  a sleek, vast, and multifunctional area that includes workstations, comfortable lounge areas, a revamped bar and relaxed meeting spaces. Guests are guaranteed a warm welcome and a plethora of amenities (like comfortable bedrooms with a ‘sleep floor’ where housekeeping services rooms on a later schedule. We can get behind that).

VOCO HOTEL THE BANK

Found in the iconic The Bank building –  once a forbidding-looking branch of First National Bank – voco Hotel The Bank is a sexy art-filled space with a super popular restaurant and coffee kiosk. This hotel is a sophisticated stay, and we love the team here – knowledgeable and always super welcoming.  Thoughtful touches include valet parking, a great range of amenities, a pick-up service from the Gautrain station and 24/7 in-room dining. The hotel shares space with Workshop 17's co-working offices and the popular Proud Mary – a modern eatery and wine bar serving innovative dishes with a superb wine list. voco Hotel The Bank is a playful, urban space that permanently buzzes.
