Radisson RED unveils Zanele Muholi

The unveiling of one of Muholi's photos at Radisson RED

Radisson RED is one of Joburg’s coolest hotels with DJs on its rooftop bar, contemporary African furniture and the specially curated art on its walls. It is in the latter that Radisson RED has just caused a stir with the unveiling Spetember of new photos by artist Zanele Muholi. The exhibition Somnyama Ngonyama (meaning ‘Hail, the Dark Lioness’) makes a powerful statement about who gets to archive black identity with Muholi turning the lens on themselves and fits into their important work of highlighting the issues those who are queer and black face. Bold and striking, the photos are spread across the ground floor and rooftop bar and are just another reason to arrange a stay at Radisson RED. The featured artist works will displayed at the hotel for 12 months.

Quirky museums worth visiting

Veterinary museum
A visitor at the Onderstepoort Veterinary Museum

The world-renowned veterinary museum at Onderstepoort in Pretoria is set to become a new tourist attraction when they open to the public in October. Previously the museum was primarily used by veterinary academics and students but soon anyone interested in learning about the history of veterinary science in South Africa will be able to take in their carefully curated displays. If you’re travelling with a vet, or a pet, then make sure to add the Onderstepoort Veterinary Museum to your itinerary.

Dinosaur museum
The mountain overlooking the new Dinosaur Interpretive Centre at Golden Gate Highlands National Park

The new Dinosaur Interpretive Centre at Golden Gate Highlands National Park in Clarens, Free State is all set for its grand opening. The building has been in construction since 2019 and features some unique elements such as its brickwork resembling dinosaur scales. The centre forms part of SANParks education initiatives and it will be a place for the public to learn about the ancient history of the area. It’s another reason to organise a hike at Golden Gate or trip to Clarens to enjoy some wine and a tasty meal at its many cafés and bars.

A close escape

Random Harvest's Wild Olive cottage

Located in Muldersdrift Random Harvest Nursery is a modest hidden-gem close to home. This indigenous nursery is a thirty minute drive from Joburg and offers an easy way to escape the noise of the city. Relax in their country cottages as you wake to rolling bird calls before going for scones at their tea tea garden. Even if you don't plan to stay the night their nursery offers a wide range of indigenous plants and is more affordable than those located within the city. Take a walk through their farm and gardens and enjoy the fresh air. If you're feeling that December travel itch but can't leave work for long pop to Random Harvest to sate that wanderlust.
