The specialty coffee craze has made it to the Costa del Sol, meaning the days of bland brews and characterless caffeine are long gone. Pull up a seat, bring a good book and savour the meticulously prepared taste of some truly excellent coffee.
A teeny-tiny stop by the Church of the Holy Martyrs, Mia Coffee Shop is generally our first port of call for that much-needed morning pick-me-up. The coffee is up there with the best in town and the interior is cute-as-a-button cool, adding an aesthetic charm to brews that back it all up. Family-run too, which is always a plus.
Only one place gets to proudly wear the crown of ‘first in the city’, and Bertani takes that prize for specialty coffee in Málaga. It opened in 2012 and provided an immediate boost to the caffeine scene in town, with professional coffee in a convivial environment. Coffee can also be bought to take home, and there are plenty of educational endeavours on the calendar.
Coffee and books — is there a better combination on the planet? We’re going to vote ‘no’ on that one, so of course we’re going to love Café con Libros. The terrace is plenty pleasant but we’re all about the interior, with creativity and history practically dripping from the walls. The coffee is great too, making this an excellent spot for creative caffeine hounds.
All boxes ticked. A sunshine terrace accentuated by some seriously friendly service, Santa Canela is a great place to visit no matter the time of day. The espresso is faultless, and there are plenty of breakfast options for the hungry. Smoothies, teas, craft beers and more also fill the menu, and the regular coffee tasting sessions are a big hit.
If you aren’t sure where to find us in Málaga, the magnificent Recyclo Bike Cafe is your best bet. This is true no matter the time of day, as the coffee in here is as refreshing as the craft beer is crisp, the service as friendly as the interior is intriguing, the breakfast as nourishing as the dinner is fulfilling.
