On September 23, 1922, the Polish government passed a bill for the construction of the port in Gdynia in the newly-created Second Polish Republic. This decision resulted in the fact that within a dozen or so years the seaside village has become a city with over 120,000 inhabitants, with the largest port in the Baltic Sea and one of the most modern in Europe. The result of this decision was documented in the photographs of Henryk Poddębski, taken during his trip to the coast in 1927-1938. His photos, featured in this exhibition, show the dimensions of modernity, which was a dream that other regions of the Second Polish Republic were striving for. Remarkable industrial and technological progress, the development of urban infrastructure, functionalist architecture of public utility, images of modern ocean liners mooring at the Marine Station, but most of all the modern lifestyle influenced the mass imagination. "Dimensions of Modernity. Gdynia through the lens of Henryk Poddębski" is on display at the Gdynia City Museum.
