A perfect pre-party leading up to the 2018 edition of the Afropunk Festival, our favourite inner-city backpackers Curiocity Backpackers teams up with African-American travel brand Nomadness Travel Tribe and Cape Town-based tour company Away To Africa for The Bridge New Year’s Eve party. Headlined by local favourite DJ Kenzhero, enjoy expansive views of the city from The AGOG's secret rooftop whisky and cigar bar Q Club while mingling with Curiocity’s international crowd.

LEBO'S NEW YEAR CAMP

One of South Africa's favourite backpackers, Lebo's Soweto Backpackers in Orlando West also has an awesome purpose-designed camp site with spectacular views over Soweto, an ideal hangout to spend the last days of 2017 and welcome in the New Year. Pitch your own tent or hire one from Lebo's, or if you prefer to sleep under a solid roof there are also three small cottages available. Throughout the New Year camp festival there are loads of fun activities on offer including cycling tours, yoga sessions, movie screenings, cookouts and more. On New Years Eve join the party at Lebo's beach bar with DJ’s before heading up to the top of the camp site for a supreme view of the midnight fireworks display.

AFROPUNK JOBURG

Now in its second year, the cult Afropunk festival brings together a world class line-up of the hottest names in black alternative music and is one of the most eagerly anticipated music festivals on the South African calendar. This year’s international headliners include Los Angeles’ neo-soul and alternative R&B superstars The Internet, experimental electronic producer, musician and rapper Flying Lotus who is presenting his first 3D show on the African continent and Public Enemy while representing local talent are major local alternative, Gqom, Afro-psychedelic, house, rap and Afro-futurist performers such as Moonchild Sanelly, Dope St Jude,  FAKA, Nomisupasta, BCUC and Thandiswa.

WALTER SISULU NEW YEAR BASH

Usher in the New Year with the kids at the inaugural Walter Sisulu New Year Bash. Starting out with an open-air picnic, explore the park and go birdwatching with the kids, or grab a cold one and relax on the manicured lawns while the DJ spins the decks. There’ll be food vendors, live music, kids activities to keep the little ones and a countdown to 2019 under the stars.

MIDSUMMER NIGHT DREAM AT EB SOCIAL KITCHEN & BAR

Travel into an enchanted forest with EB Social Kitchen's Midsummer Night’s Dream New Year’s Eve party. The evening starts off with welcome drinks, followed by a specially curated five-course menu inspired by the classic Shakespeare play, accompanied by live music from Cape Town jazz band David Cousins Quartet. Dishes on the menu include rose petal scones with lavender jam and a springbok shank casserole. End off the meal on a sweet note with the Fairy’s Delight dessert course which includes blueberry panna cotta before ushering the New Year with some bubbles.

SOWETO IN COLOURS COUNTDOWN TO 2019

Join in the countdown to 2019 at the Soweto Theatre's New Year's Eve bash. The party features local live bands, dancers and DJs performing throughout the evening, plus plenty of food and drink stalls. Organised in partnership with Jozi FM radio station, there's two stages, 20 DJs and a spectacular firework display to mark the moment when the clock strikes midnight.

ROVING BANTU'S NEW YEAR'S EVE

Mingle with Joburg’s bohemian crowd and welcome in the New Year at Brixton’s quirky one-room ‘museum’, the Roving Bantu Kitchen. Hosted by the inimitable and irreverent Sifiso Ntuli, this Afro-soul New Year’s Eve party includes a live band, DJ sets plus the delicious local cuisine Roving Bantu is known for.

NEW YEARS EVE DINNER AT FLAMES

Wine and dine to celebrate the New Year in style with dinner at the Flames restaurant at the luxurious Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff. The meal starts off with a starter buffet including dishes like baked duck spring rolls with dried fruit and Muscatel dipping sauce, and Tahitian-marinated tuna with coconut milk. For mains, choose from the live station, the a la carte menu which includes dishes like miso-cured beef tenderloin, the sushi selection which includes tataki of togarashi-seared tuna or dig into freshly chucked Lüderitz oysters and off the feast with a selection of festive desserts.

NEW YEARS EVE AT SAINT

A knockout super-sexy space packed with atmosphere and with a DJ booth and sound and lighting system that wouldn't be out of place in Ibiza, David Higgs' Sandton restaurant Saint is a super stylish restaurant to start 2019 in style. The New Year’s Eve Party includes DJ sets from Botswana born-and-raised DJ Thato Sikwane (best known by his moniker DJ Fresh), a canape dinner served from 20:00 and of course loads of bubbly. Tickets are limited, adding to the exclusive atmosphere and no under 18s allowed.

LUCKY BEAN NYE PARTY

For a relaxed New Year’s Eve, set to the tunes of the yesteryear, join Melville institution Lucky Bean at their New Year’s eve Dinner. Featuring a dedicated vegan menu (a rarity for meat-mad Joburg), the evening also features DJ sets from Joburg favourite DJ Charles Leonard, who has already garnered a dedicated following from his popular shows at the nearby Calexico Vinyl Lounge in Milpark’s 44 Stanley.  Tickets R275 for the vegan menu, R425 for regular dinner.

MOOTEE BAR NAGTROEPE NEW YEAR'S EVE PARTY

Inspired by the essence of Cape Town’s iconic Nagtroepe parade, a flamboyant annual parade by the Cape Malay Minstrels and the Cape Malay Choir, Mootee Bar invites Joburgers to “wear their primal scream on their sleeves” at their New Year’s eve party.
