Joburg restaurants – The Best Milkshakes in Joburg

25 Jan 2017

Winter or summer, there's never a bad time to indulge in a good old-fashioned milkshake. While classic flavours such as strawberry or vanilla will always be in fashion, super-thick and creamy 'gourmet shakes' in creative flavours like lemon meringue, salted caramel popcorn, toasted marshmallow or even carrot cake, also deserve to be indulged in.
Here's our round-up of some of our favourite milkshakes in Joburg.

DOLL HOUSE

Drive up and flash your lights to have the waitrons come down and serve you in your car at this old-school roadhouse. These classic shakes are super-frothy and super-cheap. The ‘soda fountain’ menu includes regular shakes and the outstanding double-thick shakes, in flavours such as lime, banana, chocolate, vanilla and Horlicks.
What to drink: Try the frothy lime milkshake for a fruit burst.

THE MILKSHAKE BAR
Part of the Protea Hotel Fire & Ice in Melrose Arch, this is the ultimate milkshake bar with almost 50 different mouthwatering combinations to choose from including Rocky Road, Lindt, lemon meringue and Turkish delight, as well as alcoholic shakes for the grown-ups. Ditch the diet and order one of the full-size goblets, resistance is futile.
What to drink: The heavenly Ferrero Rocher shake is the bar's best-seller.

TRIO CAFE
Only four shakes to choose from and the portions aren’t super-sized but the clever combinations are great and the atmosphere at this trendy cafe along Greenside's main strip is warm and welcoming.
What to drink: Top marks go to the charred marshmallow shake. The sweet nostalgic taste of childhood holidays by the camp fire is unmistakable.
116 Greenway Rd, Greenside

OREGANO
Blink and you could miss this cute little patisserie and catering company tucked in next to a string of shops and cafes on this newly fashionable corner of Linden's 7th Street. There's only one table inside so make a plan to sip your milkshake on the go.
What to do drink: The chocolate brownie milkshake could not be more outrageously decadent made chock full of rich and chocolaty homemade brownies.
71 7th St, Linden

TASHA'S ROSEBANK
The Rosebank branch of everyone's favourite home-grown cafe chain Tasha's has a New York inspired menu which includes some super rich 'paparazzi shakes'. Combinations include timeless classics like cherry and marshmallow or peppermint crisp. For those averse to the calorific implications of massive milkshakes opt for a healthy smoothie instead made with super-foods such as kale, spiced agave syrup, hemp powder or chia seeds.
What to drink: The banana and brownie shake, packed with chunky chocolate brownie pieces and fresh bananas, is a treat.

NEW YORK MINUTE
This convenient coffee and snack bar in Sandton City mall specialises in all-American products which are beloved in the USA and somewhat under-appreciated outside of the country, such as jars of marshmallow fluff or Reese's Butter Cups. Unusual American delicacies aside the super thick New York gourmet shakes are not to be missed.
What to drink: The selection is pretty limited, if you like fruit choose the cherry shake or for fans of the sweet stuff the caramel fudge shake is one of their best sellers.
