Wits Art Museum presents South African painter Alfred Thoba’s newest exhibition A Step becomes a Statement. An artist who found his artistic feet as an anti-apartheid artist, Thoba’s works were featured in the Market Gallery’s famous 1988 exhibition 100 Artists Protest Detention without Trial Exhibition. Regarding himself as largely self-taught, Thoba has also trained briefly under South African art icons such as Bill Ainslie, although as he himself says “I went to them with the knowledge. I was actually born with it”.

Thoba’s works take their titles from written narratives and stories that accompany them. Framed as a dialogue with and about the works, these narratives offer a glimpse into Thoba’s creative mind and the thoughts he was having while creating his art.
