Baba G: Rotisserie and Deli

Named for the Middle Eastern aubergine dish babaganoush, Baba G is a small rotisserie chicken takeaway spot tucked into Illovo's Post Office Centre that specialises in Afro-Mediterranean flavours. Run by the same team behind Joburg's popular Tutto Food Co food trucks (whose paella stand can be found at popular weekend markets Neighbourgoods and Fourways Farmers Market) you'll know Baba G by its bold canary yellow paint scheme and its playful cartoon-like murals that cheekily reference old-school 1950s advertising.

Ordering is simple. First choose your chicken from the rotisserie; herb and salt, Middle Eastern style (whose crisp skin is thick with fragrant herbs and lemon) or spicy North African style are your three options. Then choose from a selection of seven freshly-made salads from the deli counter. Favourites include the Marrakech couscous salad with roasted vegetables, herbs, sultanas, a sprinkling of feta and Baba G's homemade preserved lemon, and the crunchy Sahara Slaw with spinach, celery, fennel, apple, cabbage and zesty lemony dressing.

Finally order a few super soft 'pillow breads' to wrap it all up with. Baba G's druze-style flatbreads (similar to a naan bread and typically associated with the Israeli-Arab minority Druze people) are made fresh with your order. The staff deftly spin and roll out the dough (made with unbleached stone-ground flour), slap it onto a traditional dome shaped hot plate, douse it with a generous dusting of za'atar herbs and once its all fluffed up and ready to eat they'll pop it piping hot into a paper packet to take away – all within the same amount of time it will probably take you to deliberate over the enticing choice of salads behind the counter.

Alternatively opt for one of the lafa wraps, also made with Druze breads. Keeping with Baba G's signature simplicity there are a choice of two; pulled rotisserie chicken or roasted aubergine, each of which comes stuffed with your choice of fresh dips, homemade pickles and salad.

Although this is first and foremost a speedy takeaway spot, there are a handful of stools and a small counter in the store if you simply can't wait until you get home to tuck into your chicken.
