Bank 001 - Emerging Contemporaries
Thursday Mar 8 - Friday Mar 30
Illovo Square Shopping Center, 3 Rivonia Rd, Illovo
Primarily working with embroidery and wood, Pretoria-based sculptor and artist Franli Meintjies describes her art as “a voice trying to enhance racial cohesion and racial togetherness in South Africa”. Her latest works include The Noise We Make, a large-scale installation of a sound wave from a recording Meintjies made in Pretoria's city centre.
Winner of the 2014 Best Visual Artist award at the prestigious KKNK Art Festival, Hannalie Taute’s works delve into the mythical worlds of fairy tales while also referencing contemporary feminism. Taute uses found objects in her visual language as well as rubber and embroidery, often seeking to subvert the original message of the fairy tales her works depict.
Painter and screenprinter Mashudu Nevhutalu rose to acclaim for his Warhol-esque screenprints based on old family photographs. Investigating the ways in which we capture memories, Nevhutalu seeks to indulge the mind’s nostalgia with subjects he describes as “in some way...figures that we can all relate to.”
