Best Breakfasts

It’s not a perfect breakfast without fluffy scrambled eggs or poached eggs delivered just the way you ordered them, fresh juices, and aromatic coffee. To check all those boxes we suggest you head in these directions.

Good service, Illy coffee and possibly the best scrambled eggs in town have made Croft & Co. the early morning hangout for Joburg’s opinionistas, writers and other media types. You’ll find the owner, Parkview “mayor” Grant Ravenscroft sitting at the next-door table exchanging news with his many loyal regulars. An equal opportunity cafe Croft also welcomes the Louis Vuitton-handbag-toting, lycra-clad, Range-Rover-driving set post-school-drop-off and gym workout.

Breakfast is not just breakfast here – with real effort having gone into creating a superb range of choices that include co-owner Kev’s Tiger Oats, creamy, drizzled with honey, fruit and toasted almonds. There are buttermilk pancakes, and even mince on toast. The Babalaas breakfast comes with a shot glass of cream soda designed to cure even the weirdest of hangovers or create new reasons to feel unwell.
71 7th St (cnr 3rd Ave), Linden

Reservations are required for this sumptuous brunch at Flames restaurant. The price is as steep as the hill atop which Flames sits, but utterly worth it for what is probably Joburg's most impressive spread with an unforgettable view of one of the world's most forested cities.

Glenda Lederle is renowned as a patissier and for her delicious seasonal café-style food. This stylish French-influenced café attracts a loyal following of high society bosses and belles. Try the smashed avo on toast or decadent Madagascan vanilla flapjacks and don’t leave without a takeaway slice of the salted caramel popcorn cake. Breakfast until 11:30.

This art deco-inspired café loved by the Vespa-riding breakfast crowd is a shrine to the free-range egg, any way you like it: poached, boiled, scrambled or prepared as a shakshuka (Middle Eastern-style baked eggs placed atop moreish Yemeni flatbread), and served all day. The café is licensed, so start the day with a Bloody Mary.

Pretty and pink with an Astro Turf carpet, and perfectly placed on art gallery row. A spectacular coffee machine takes counter pride of place at this cosy cafe. For breakfast, the poached eggs with spicy tomatoes are supreme.

Before bread and croissants became a verboten by low-carb devotees, Joburg filmmaker Paul Zwick spent five years in France learning the art of being a patissier and bread-maker par excellence. This is the place to ditch the diet for the best baguette in the land and perfectly buttery and flaky croissants.

Excellent menu options turn your morning meal into a memorable experience with a choice of 'healthy', 'sweet' and 'savoury', plus breakfast burritos. This busy cafe at 44 Stanley Ave is surrounded by fashionable stores and its tables flow outdoors onto a covered veranda and into a picturesque courtyard - perfect for relaxed family meals.

Natasha Sideris invented this chain of boutique cafes loved and frequented by socialites and anyone else who enjoys fresh and tasty food served in immensely generous portions. She also continues to ensure that each branch lives up to the brand - flavourful food presented with flair. Try the Monaco - poached eggs on wilted spinach with feta, red onion and black mushrooms.
