An Act of Defiance: The Story of Bram Fischer

This film details the remarkable courtroom drama that surrounded the infamous Rivonia Trial of 1963 which saw Nelson Mandela and his fellow Rivonia Trialists facing the possibility of death or life imprisonment after being tried for their attempts to end the rule of the apartheid state. The film is told from the point of view of the tenacious Afrikaans lawyer Bram Fischer, himself a covert anti-apartheid activist and prominent communist party member, who represented the Rivonia trialists in their Pretoria trial. Following the trial, Fischer continued to remain active in the underground anti-apartheid movement and was himself put on trial in 1966 for conspiracy to overthrow the government. He was sentenced to life imprisonment and died a prisoner in 1975 from complications relating to untreated cancer.

The Story of Racheltjie de Beer

Filmmaker Matthys Boschoff's thrilling new historical drama The Story of Racheltjie de Beer is based on the best-selling novel of the same name, which in turn is inspired by the popular folk story of a young Voortrekker in the 1800s. The figure of Racheltjie de Beer became an Afrikaans folk hero for her selfless bravery. Trapped on their way from the Cape to the goldfields of the north by a freak snow storm, the teenage Racheltjie is separated from her family in the Drakensburg mountains and bravely sets out to rescue her 5-year old brother, by sacrificing her own life to keep him safe from the blizzard.

Skemerson

Skemerson (translated roughly as 'sun cry moon' in English) is an uplifting new South African film about overcoming depression that is inspired by a true story. The film opens with the film's lead character standing atop the Bloukrans bridge preparing to take his own life. When he meets two strangers on the bridge, a young woman and her frail elderly mother, the trio end up spending a weekend together that changes all of their lives. A tender and moving look at the challenges of overcoming guilt and mental illness.
