Described most memorably by one fan as “Gogol Bordello playing soccer with Brenda Fassie during a kwaito apocalypse” Bombshelter Beast is one of Joburg's most exciting, off-the-wall, alternative music collectives. No two gigs are ever the same as the group mix up old school kwaito, house, dancehall, ska, rock, Boeremusiek and hip hop with plenty of Balkan influences, tubas and trumpets and the occasional vuvuzela.

The inspiration for the collective came about when the acclaimed South African jazz trumpeter Marcus Wyatt was approached to create music for a local comedy drama. Fast forward a couple of years and the dozen or so collaborators that make up the rag-tag travelling band Bombshelter Beast now include iconic rapper Pitch Black Afro and Speedy Kobak on vocals, who Wyatt describes as a “mad Polish guy who escaped communism and has been here for 35 years.”
