Visitors to 44 Stanley have long admired bonsai aficionado Henk Swanepoel’s beautiful installation along the tree-filled courtyards of the converted industrial complex. Buying a bonsai tree from him previously was predominately an online experience after you went through love at first sight, so passersby will be pleased that his business has grown into a brick-and-mortar store. There is no longer any need to wait until weekends to access his vast knowledge of the Japanese art of bonsai and how to take care of them.
The new store, located at the west entrance of 44 Stanley, expands his concept for those that understand the impact and beauty of nature in their lives. The store sells all things bonsai-related and lifestyle products that fit in with his ethos of considered living. You’ll also find an extensive range of boutique gardening products including Osuka high quality Japanese steel bonsai tools, bonsai accessories, plant elixirs, soils, ‘Grow your Own’ seed bags and much more.
The lifestyle products are carefully curated with a heavy emphasis on South African made items, ethically produced, and high-quality products. They include Monomo indigo hand-dyed silk scarves and Egyptian cotton kimonos; South African skincare from the Skin Creamery and Kwena; room aromatics from Lothantique; EnMasse loose-leaf teas and Ecoplanet bamboo charcoal water filters.
With his careful touch and passion for greenery, Swanepoel has created a space that immediately takes you away from your harried urban existence and if you’re lucky you may be able to wrap up a part of it and take it home.
