Book Discussion - Land of Our Ancestors
Saturday Mar 23 14:30
75 4th Ave, Melville
Tackling the burning South African issue of land and who it belongs to, in Land of Our Ancestors (previously published as The People of Welgeval) Tema based her epic historical novel on the true history of her own ancestors, two men who had been child slaves in the mid 19th Century and who went onto establish their own farm. The story is a triumphant and inspirational tale of how the two men overcame childhood adversity while also uplifting countless other disadvantaged and dispossessed people from the community by giving them a home on their farm.
Set against a backdrop of slavery, colonialism, the Anglo-Boer Wars and the rise of apartheid, the book is an insightful retelling of South African history told from a unique standpoint. This new version of the book also comes with a new prologue and epilogue providing more historical background on Tema's ancestors and providing updates on her family's land claim on the original farm.
The discussion starts from 14:30.
