Book Launch - Footnotes for the Panther: Conversations Between William Kentridge and Denis Hirson
Monday Feb 26 17:30
163 Jan Smuts Ave, Parkwood
In June 2010, Kentridge asked Hirson to join him in a public conversation at the opening of his retrospective exhibition at the Jeu du Paume in Paris. This conversation was a catalyst for many more conversations in both private and public, exploring the issues and themes recurring and arising from Kentridge’s work.
Best known for his allegorical animations of charcoal drawings, Kentridge’s works span various mediums from sculpture to books, stereoscopes and opera works. Hirson, who has lived in France since 1975, is a prolific writer and a winner of the Alan Paton Award (for his 2006 book White Scars).
The book Footnotes for the Panther: Conversations between William Kentridge and Denis Hirson tracks the conversations between Hirson and Kentridge over nine engagements, providing a critique of contemporary South African art from the unique perspective of a much-celebrated artist.
