Celebrating Women and Public Art in Newtown

Saturday Aug 24 10:00–15:00       10 Henry Nxumalo St, Newtown
share
Marking Women's Month in South Africa, Newtown's streets will gain a new coat of paint as the neighbourhood's deteriorating streets signs are given a makeover, painted with images of African women created by local artists. The aim of the public art activation is to expand on the number of historical female figures that are represented in public art in Joburg, redressing the fact that many of the public artworks depicting women in Joburg (and in other world cities) often represent an abstract concept rather than real historical people.

The public is invited to come and join in the dialogue around the representation of women in public art as part of a self-guided painting tour through Newtown, stopping to engage with the artists as they set about creating the new signage. Maps indicating all the sites involved in the activation can be collected from outside the Newtown Music Factory at 10 Henry Nxumalo Street between 10:00 and 15:00. There will also be two guided tours leaving from the same location at 11:00 and at 13:00.
