From weekly Sunday sundowner sessions with internationally-renowned DJs to monthly art parties and the best queer nights out, here's our guide to Braamfontien's best parties this summer.
WE GOT THE JAZZ
Monthly concert series.
One of Braamfontein’s sexiest spaces, the Untitled Basement one floor below the popular cafe-bar The Artivist, opens up every month for the We Got the Jazz evening, a series of regular jazz performances featuring some of the hottest acts in the local contemporary jazz scene. Playing the November edition of November 23 is the Rebirth of Cool, a band that brings together some of South Africa’s best hip hop artists and jazz musicians for a genre-bending night of old school jazz, trap, R&B and hip hop.
Venue: Untitled Basement. Tickets R120.
Monthly Saturday afternoon party. Catch the December edition on Sat Feb 2
Rumba, kizomba and salsa the Saturday afternoon away at Soweto-born DJs Tha Muzik and DJ Kenzhero's monthly Obrigado party which takes place in the historic surrounds of Constitution Hill. The music line-up is everything from 1970s disco and 1990s hip hop to Afrobeat, bossa nova and funk, plus there’s rum cocktails and spicy paella food stall to look forward to.
Venue: Constitution Hill. Tickets R100 before 18:00, R150 after 18:00.
Every second Wednesday of the month
Transforming the iconic Kitchener’s Carvery Bar dancefloor into a ‘secret garden’ for Joburg’s queer community, at the Pussy Party expect a flamboyant crowd and an anything-goes atmosphere where sudden camp vogue 'deathdrops' are the rule not the exception. Awkward dance moves are welcomed and the music runs the gamut from golden oldies and 1980s pop to tropical tunes, kwaito and house.
Venue: Kitchener's Carvery Bar. Entrance is free for women and queer folk, R50 for men.
First Thursday of every month
Head to Braamfontein on the first Thursday of every month for a lively art party that includes everything from exhibition opening parties at the neighbourhood's many art galleries to DJ sets at local bars and pop-up stores, live music, poetry and performance art. By and large entrance to all First Thursdays venues is free and most events run between 17:00 and 22:00. Major First Thursdays hotspots to head to include Reserve Street, 99 Juta, Wits Art Museum, The Grove and the area around the corner of De Beer and Juta Streets.
