Derek Gripper at Lucky Bean

Sunday Mar 18 20:30

Inspired by Malian history and folk music, South African guitarist Derek Gripper reinvents the traditional compositions of Malian kora masters such as Toumani Diabate and Ballake Sissoko for the classical guitar. The kora is a 21-stringed lute-bridge-harp from West Africa, and the transition from the kora to the six-stringed classical guitar is a technical feat on its own.

Gripper began his formal music training at the age of seven on the violin before moving on to other stringed instruments. Over the years his musical style has evolved to encompass a broad range of influences and in particular he has found inspiration in the improvisational musical styles of Cape Town's carnivals and in traditional African folk music.

Catch Derek Gripper performing at Lucky Bean in Melville this Sun Mar 18. Dinner is available before the show (served from 18:30 in time for the performance at 20:30). Booking is essential. Email info@luckybeanrestaurant.co.za or call +27 11 482 5572 to book.
