Take one of Joburg’s most popular book shops, two visionary architects and a new chain bookstore owner, Benjamin Trisk of Exclusive Books, who loves selling books. It’s a recipe for a show-stopping space that includes a bookstore, coffee house, bar and restaurant with expansive views across the treed suburbs, bringing together two of life’s greatest comforts - books and food.
The books flow into the restaurant, a lively semi-industrial space clawed back from the Hyde Park Corner shopping centre’s parking lot. The impressive interiors are inviting with Moroccan tiles and parquet, mismatched furniture pieces and a luxury lounge, all put together with a meticulous attention to detail. The menu is sophisticated but utterly comforting. Highlights include panzanella and slow-cooked 72-hour short ribs, a feather-light salmon mousse and creamy mushroom risotto.
Breakfast is served from 08:00-11:00 every day. Expect simple classic that make use of the best availlable ingredients, such as banana bread with creamed cheese, lemon and blueberries; shaskshuka; eggs Benedict with spinach and smoked salmon; and, ricotta crumpets with white chocolate mascarpone, honey and nuts. Wash it down with a freshly made smoothie, Legardo coffee, hand-crafted Rennefeldt Tea or a breakfast cocktail such as a Bellini or mimosa.
