Joburg's dining scene is always changing, reflecting the city's love of all things new. In our #FreshlyPlated local restaurant news round-up we bring you the lowdown on Joburg's latest new restaurants and trends so you can stay ahead of the crowd. 

Here's a look at the latest local foodie news that you need to know about in Joburg this month.


SALT pop-up dinner at OneNineOne with Craig Cormack
This month the contemporary OneNineOne restaurant at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Rosebank teams up with leading chef Craig Cormack, one of the masterminds behind the celebrated SALT restaurant at the Paul Cluver wine estate in the Cape, for a special series of pop-up dinners. There are two SALT pop-ups scheduled - on July 25 and Aug 1 - with each evening promising to be a memorable three-course gourmet journey. The dinner costs R450 per person. Booking is essential.

Winter High Tea menu at Palazzo
High Tea at the Palazzo is always a special occasion and this winter the luxurious hotel in Montecasino is serving a special Winter High Tea menu, available until Aug 31 (pictured top left). Special seasonal treats include homemade apple crumble cupcake, Mexican spiced chocolate pannacotta with capsicum compote, roast beef and wholegrain blackberry mustard pretzels and smoked salmon and truffle ricotta on a beetroot roll.

The newest bar and eatery to hit Melville's 7th Street is the Anti Social Social Club, a colourful bar and restaurant at corner of 3rd Avenue. The venue is divided into two interconnected spaces - the main Anti Social Social Club which focuses on Asian-inspired dishes and cocktails and the smaller Tiny Tiki Bar serving tropical cocktails and a food menu that is devoted to all things bacon.

Lexi's Healthy Eatery to launch in Rosebank
A new branch of the hugely popular vegetarian cafe Lexi's Healthy Eatery (which first launched last year in Sandton) is due to open in The Zone@Rosebank in late August, making it the first exclusively vegetarian venue in the neighbourhood.

The Whippet in Melville Harvest Store opens its doors
A spacious new branch of Linden's famous neighbourhood cafe The Whippet has opened on Melville's 7th Street. The new 'Harvest Store' cafe caters to the morning crowd with breakfast (pictured top left) available from 07:00 and lunch until 15:00. The coffee is excellent coffee and there's plenty of cosy places to park up for a few hours including a small courtyard area in the back.

Voodoo Lily in Birdhaven has a new look and menu
The charming neighbourhood cafe Voodoo Lily in Birdhaven has reopened after an extensive refurbishment. The cafe-bistro is sporting a bright new look and a fresh new menu thanks to new owner Larry Hodes (who also owns Arbour Cafe next door and Calexico at 44 Stanley). The colourful new interiors include some magnificent new statement mosaic walls, a dedicated bar serving wine, cocktails and craft beers and a separate counter area adapted as 'workstations'. Meanwhile new dishes on the menu include shakshuka, loaded latkes and hot brisket on rye.

Clico Boutique Hotel celebrates its 13th birthday with Fire and Ice
The elegant Clico Boutique Hotel in Rosebank turns 13 this month and is celebrating with a fun 'fire and ice' themed party on Friday July 26. The birthday bash starts with sundowners on the terrace at Clico Restaurant before guests sit down to enjoy a sumptuous six-course wine pairing menu crafted by Head Chef Neo Mkhwanazi and Montpellier wines. There's also live music and lots of prizes to win on the night. Tickets for the Fire and Ice party cost R650 (including wine).

New Morosko winter cocktail menu at Mix Cocktail Bar
Mix Cocktail Bar's chief mixologist Devin Cross has put the final touches on his latest seasonal cocktail menu which will be available from late July. The flavours and creations on the leading cocktail bar's new menu have been inspired by visits to Scotland and Russia and Devin's ongoing experimentations with fermentation techniques. Highlights include a highly anticipated new red velvet version of his famous 'Cake' cocktail and a cocktail based on the traditional Russian rye bread drink Kvass. 

A new prawn restaurant opens in Illovo
A new restaurant dedicated to the enjoyment of prawns - The Prawnery Bistro & Bar - has opened at Illovo Junction at 1 Corlett Drive. As the name suggests there's a major focus on prawns with the signature kilo of grilled prawns a menu highlight. There's also plenty of other seafood on offer and regular seasonal specials.

Limited edition smoke inspired cocktails at Marble
David Higgs' Marble restaurant at Keyes Art Mile has launched a new limited-edition themed cocktail menu. The first menu in the new limited-edition series is themed around 'smoke' with flamboyant flaming drinks and plenty of smokey flavours. The Smoke menu will be available at the Marble bar for the next few months. Our favourites include the Cold Smoke (Grey Goose vodka, Amaretto, Angostura Aromatic, chamomile, honey and citrus served in a smoking teapot) and the Smoke From Above (Patron Resposado, honey, citrus, grapefruit soda and 'smoked vanilla air').

Che Argentine is moving to a new location
One of our all-time favourite Joburg grill houses, Che Argentine Grill, closes its doors in Maboneng at the end of July ahead of a move to a new location at 128 Jan Smuts Avenue in Parkwood. The new restaurant next to the Parks Centre (just down the road from the busy Park Corner area) is due to open on August 6.

Coalition pizza comes to Sandton
The popular pizzeria Coalition, based at Park Corner in Rosebank and famous for their traditional wood-fired Neapolitan-style pizzas, has opened a second branch in Sandton Central. Find Coalition Sandton at 23 Fredman Drive.
