Joburg goes wild for Maps's buns


Local TV presenter, actor and model Maps Maponyane has opened his own burger joint, Buns Out, in Linden and Joburg foodies, as well as Maps's one million Twitter followers, are going positively wild for his juicy burgers and buns. Join the queue for Joburg's new favourite burger at Buns Out, 32 7th Street, Linden.

Braamfontein's radical new cafe and bookshop The Commune

A new non-profit coffee shop and bookdealers The Commune has opened in Braamfontein on Reserve Street. Describing itself as “a radical bookstore and reference library”, the books on the shelves at The Commune have a firmly anti-establishment focus that reflects interests in revolutionary politics, grassroots social movements, decolonisation, queer theory, feminism, pan-Africanism and environmentalism. There’s also coffee, tea and delicious vegan cakes.

New bohemian cafe, Soul Jozi, opens at Arts on Main in Maboneng

Maboneng has a quirky new cafe hangout that will appeal to the inner hippy inside any hardened city dweller. The super-friendly corner cafe, Soul Jozi at Arts on Main (next to Mama Mexicana) is filled with weird and wonderful upcycled furniture, interesting fashion, gifts and greenery. The Soul Jozi menu focuses on healthy living and super strong kimera coffee, with a great selection of refreshing and invigorating smoothies and homemade cakes.

Soul Jozi's owners are also launching the SoulJozi Experience, a new monthly event, the first edition of which will happen on Friday November 1 and Saturday November 2 with live music and DJs both inside and outside the cafe that hopes to bridge the divide between Maboneng's street vendors and brick and mortar retailers. 

Sin+Tax wins at this year's World's 50 Best Bars awards

Rosebank’s secret speakeasy-style cocktail bar Sin+Tax has been awarded in this year’s prestigious World’s 50 Best Bars awards in London. The only bar in Africa to make it onto the exclusive list, Sin+Tax comes in at number 88 in the 51-100 section. We won't be surprised if next year they place even higher. 

A new beach club to open in Fourways

Altitude Beach Club
Joburg may be several hundred kilometres from the sea but that doesn't mean that Joburg party-goers can't have their own beach club in the city. Due to open in mid-November, Altitude Beach Club next to Fourways Mall is marketing itself as a luxury clubbing experience serving up sushi, Champagne and house beats in a sunny beach-bar style setting.

The Singleton Sundowner Sessions pop-up bar at Fairlawns Boutique Hotel

The beautiful Fairlawns Boutique Hotel in Morningside hosts an exclusive whisky pop-up bar experience this month with The Singleton Single Malt Whisky. The pop-up bar is open on Friday afternoons from 15:00 to 18:00 fo sundowner sessions whisky cocktails priced at just R85.  

Alice & Fifth wins Best Overall Restaurant at the Restaurant & Bar Design Awards

Alice & Fifth

The super-stylish underground restaurant-bar and nightclub Alice & Fifth in Sandton Central scooped the top award in this year's International Restaurant & Bar Design Awards. The TristanPlessis design studio who designed the space came out top among entries from almost 70 countries to be awarded Best Overall Restaurant Design, the first time that this coveted award has ever been given to a South African design studio.

Sky-high fine dining coming to The Leonardo

Sandton's luxurious new skyscraper The Leonardo is almost complete and by the end of 2019, a host of new sky-high dining venues will be opened on several floors of the luxurious 55-storey building. Among The Leonardo's planned restaurants are the Leo’s Lounge, Bar and Deli Kitchen, a wood-fired restaurant known as Octo Bar and a swanky restaurant and wine bar Aurum Restaurant on the 7th floor. The 250 capacity Aurum Restaurant promises "a contemporary interpretation of Modern European Cuisine with a casual, all-day offering for breakfast, brunch and lunch and high-end dining for dinner". And as with all great skyscrapers, a sky-high rooftop cocktail bar on the very top floor, the Sky Bar, is also planned.

Joburg celebrates Global Champagne Day

Champagne Day at Fairlawns Boutique Hotel

There's never a bad moment to drink a glass of bubbly and Global Champagne Day is an especially excellent time to pop the cork on a bottle of France's finest, as many of Joburg's restaurants will be presenting special offers on top French labels like Veuve Clicquot and Perrier-Jouët. Book for Clico Hotel in Rosebank's Champagne Day celebrations on Friday, October 18 where they are hosting an opulent four-course Veuve Clicquot Champagne pairing menu (R950 per person, book online at clico.co.za).

Meanwhile, on Saturday October 19 the Fairlawns Boutique Hotel & Spa will be running a buy one get one free special all day on glasses of Perrier-Jouët at their al fresco Champagne terrace.

Winner Winner chicken dinner

The Melville branch of local Mexican chain Perron, has closed and the owners have relaunched the space as Winner Winner, a casual eatery devoted to all things chicken, including classic fried chicken, chicken burgers, wings and a whole range of interesting vegan and vegetarian dishes.
