This summer the German cultural institute Goethe-Institut is bringing back the magic of the drive-in cinema with an free pop-up cinema at the historic 1 Fox Precinct. The drive-in cinema pop-up takes place in the 1 Fox car park from November 26 to 29 and showcases some of the best African films of recent years with food and drinks available on sale from a selection of food stalls to enjoy while you watch.

In the 20th Century going to the drive-in to watch a movie was a prominent part of Joburg culture, a fashion which sadly began to fade away just as the drive-in was becoming more accessible to all South Africans. Among the last drive-ins to close was the Top Star Drive-in, located just a few kilometres from the 1 Fox Precinct and perched on top of a massive mine dump.

In 2020 the restrictions of Covid-19 and major improvements in screening technologies have seen a global revival in the fascination with the drive-in cinema, prompting the Goethe-Institut in Johannesburg to use the pop-up drive-in format to bring some of the best in African cinema, for free, to Joburg audiences this spring.

Burkinabe

Burkinabè is a documentary film that looks at the inspirational movement of creative nonviolent resistance in Burkina Faso. Through music, film, ecology, visual art, and architecture, the creative community of artists and engaged citizens in this small landlocked West African country have successfully kept up a spirit of resistance that has forced political change. After assuming the presidency of Burkina Faso in 1983, Thomas Sankara was killed in a 1987 coup d'état led by his friend and close advisor Blaise Compaoré, who subsequently ruled the country as an autocrat for twenty-seven years. In October 2014 a massive popular insurrection led to his removal.

Banned from screening in its country of origin, Kenya, this film by Wauri Kahiu is about two girls who fall in love against the societal conventions imposed on them. When this young love blossoms between them, the two girls are forced to choose between happiness and safety.
