Saturday Mar 17 - Thursday Apr 12       163 Jan Smuts Ave, Parkwood

Portuguese psychologist, interdisciplinary artist and writer Grada Kilomba presents her first solo exhibition in Africa at the Goodman Gallery. Best known for her subversive writing (her 2008 book Plantation Memories: Episodes of Everyday Racism tackled issues ranging from hair politics to the N-word in daily language), Kilomba insists that “Colonialism is a wound that has never been properly treated, an infected wound that always hurts and sometimes bleeds".

Through her art Kilomba leads a conversation about the critical issues surrounding decolonisation, from the standpoint of a female African diaspora artist, asking the questions; Who can speak?, what can we speak about? and what happens when we speak?

Using storytelling, performance, text collages and video and sound installations, Kilomba explores the intricacies between speaking, silencing and listening, creating a space in which previously silenced voices can speak 'the unspeakable' about the ongoing trauma of colonialism.

Opening event Mar 17 at 17:00.
