Multi-award-winning playwright and author Mike van Graan’s Green Man Flashing returns to the stage at the Auto General Theatre on the Square. Set six weeks before South Africa’s second democratic elections in 1999, Green Man Flashing follows a white personal assistant who is raped by her boss; a high-profile black government minister with a sterling anti-apartheid struggle record.

Exploring topics of sexual harassment, personal and political violence, Green Man Flashing delves into current issues plaguing South African society, echoing scandals such as Jacob Zuma’s high-profile rape case and Zuptagate despite premiering 14 years ago. Taking its name from the pedestrian crossing signal at a traffic light, Green Man Flashing asks the question “What lengths will people go to in the name of the greater political good?”
