iwasshot in joburg :)

‘From the streets of Joburg to the streets of the world’ is the tagline of this innovative studio. An outlet for former street kids who receive photography training through the I Was Shot Foundation, Bernard Viljoen started this photography project in 2009 in unusual circumstances. A three-month community-service stint, where he committed to working at a children’s shelter to train youngsters to take photographs with disposable cameras, is today a platform for providing young men with skills that have brought access to opportunities previously beyond their reach. The confidence that stems from this is inestimable, as is the value of having the means to earn a living.

Based in Maboneng's artistic centre Arts on Main, iwasshot in joburg :) produces an array of products emblazoned with their unique urban photographs that include mounted canvas and photo block prints, cool notebooks, postcards, coasters, greeting cards and fridge magnets.

At their Maboneng studio, which looks out onto one of Maboneng's busiest corners, you can shop their full range of designs which also now includes 'iwasstrashed in Joburg', a wall decor range made from upcycled scrap paper and 'iwassmade in Joburg' a cool series of uniquely Joburg T-shirts, tote bags and cushion covers.
