Every year a handful of new entrepreneurs are invited to come down and pitch their creative business ideas with the hope of becoming a J&B Hive member. Members then get to join the J&B Hive co-working space in Braamfontein, make use of available high-tech equipment used in the creative industry such as cameras, computers installed with the latest software and radio and recording equipment. In recognition of the immense value of being part of a large network, joining the Hive is also a forever deal. Once you become a Hive member you are always a member.
Leading Hive entrepreneurs who have used the space to catalyse their business ideas include local tour company Hello Africa Travel, Soweto-based music promotion and events company His n Hers Jams, the Old School Coffee Company and award-winning sneaker cleaning and shoe-care company Walk Fresh.
It’s not all work work work however. Importantly J&B Hive is also very much a social space. On the ground floor, which opens out onto a colourful courtyard, is the J&B Hive cafe and bar and upstairs the stage (which was once the famous The Orbit jazz club) is regularly made available for concerts, talks, workshops, fashion shows, poetry readings, book launches and other events led by Braamfontein’s creative community.
Previously located two blocks over at 100 Juta Street, the J&B Hive’s newer and bigger space on De Korte Street is envisaged as an opportunity for the Hive entrepreneurial network to continue to grow and to keep hosting ever bigger events.
Keep an eye on their Facebook page for all the latest happenings including regular parties such as the Open Rooms Sessions and #JoziLiveCulture‘s Play The City concert series showcasing upcoming local musicians.
