Joburg Ballet’s The Nutcracker is a nostalgic, joyous take on the familiar ballet classic that officially kicks off (or more like pirouettes into) the holiday season!
Joburg Ballet company’s spring season opens with a 10-day run at the Joburg Theatre of Tchaikovsky’s beloved holiday masterpiece, The Nutcracker, and the whole family will be delighted by this heartwarming take on the 19th-century classic. The familiar cheerful sounds of the season are brought to life by the accompanying Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra—helmed by conductor Eddie Clayton. The breadth of talent on display is the show’s highlight, from the elite principal dancers Shannon Glover, Nicole Ferreira-Dill and Claudia Monja, to the sprightly youth troupe that represents a bright future for South African ballet.
The animated young actor who plays Fritz steals the show in the opening scenes of Act I with an entertaining and commanding stage presence beyond his years. But the production is at its best with the spellbinding vignettes of Act II, from the athleticism (and flexibility!) of the Russian and Arabian “coffee” dancers, to the artistry of the Waltz of the Flowers ensemble and Sugar Plum Fairy—choreographed with originality by former Joburg Ballet senior principal dancer Angela Malan.
Scenes designed with understated elegance by Wilhelm Disbergen transport the audience alongside the titular Nutcracker Prince and Clara on their adventure across the fairytale realm.
December may still feel achingly far away — but an evening at the ballet is the perfect way to conjure up some holiday spirit.
