The countdown to Christmas holidays has begun! While Europe has its snowy Christmas night markets, here in South Africa the evenings are warm during the festive season and perfect for enjoying a leisurely evening of shopping outdoors.Take the stress out of gift shopping by heading to one of these festive markets and fairs taking place across Joburg this holiday season.

MOONLIGHT MARKET AT BRYANSTON ORGANIC MARKET
Celebrating the festive season, The Bryanston Organic and Natural Market hosts a festive moonlight market every Tuesday evening from November 20 until December 18. Always one of the city's most popular Christmas markets, at the Moonlight Market you can shop for the most beautiful selection of handmade Christmas gifts, sample the festive food offerings and enjoy live music performances. Very much a family orientated event this is a fantastic place to bring the kids with magic shows, puppet shows, jugglers and carol singing by candlelight at the festive Children's Theatre from 17:00-19:00 and the chance to win prizes.

PARKVIEW CHARITY CHRISTMAS MARKET
Parkview hosts its annual Christmas extravaganza at George Hay Park on the first weekend of December in aid of a number of worthy causes, including local soup kitchens, elderly care homes, abused women and children's shelters and HIV support groups. In addition to the dozens of food and craft stalls, there's also live music, a beer garden and a Champagne and oysters bar for the adults, as well as a kids funfair and lots of festive activities for the whole family. Open Fri Nov 30 from 15:00–22:00, Sat Dec 1 from 10:00–22:00, Sun Dec 2 from 10:30–16:00.

THE LINDEN MARKET IN THE PARK XMAS EDITION
Founded as a platform to promote local artists, designers, and artisanal food producers based in the pretty suburb of Linden, this market has now become one of Joburg's most popular, with the increase in size and popularity prompting the market to move down the road to the monthly Linden Market at the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens in Emmarentia. This year the market's annual Christmas edition is taking place over two days and features more than 160 local artisans and food and drinks traders. A lovely place to shop with a pop-up bubbly bar, live music and the opportunity to take a dog from the local shelter for a walk in the park at the 'date a dog' stand.

FOURWAYS FARMERS MARKET CHRISTMAS NIGHT MARKET 

A relaxed night of Christmas gift shopping in a rustic setting, which despite its location in the middle of Fourways' suburban sprawl, somehow manages to feel like it's in the middle of the countryside. Indulge in home-baked Christmas cakes and gingerbread cookies, enjoy live music and Christmas carol singing and look out for an appearance by Santa Claus himself.

THE JOHANNESBURG HERITAGE FOUNDATION'S CHRISTMAS BOOK FAIRE

The Holy Family College in Parktown opens its doors for one-day-only on Saturday December 8 to host the Johannesburg Heritage Foundation's annual Christmas Book Faire. As one of the city's most impressive examples of Victorian school design, the Holy Family College site itself is a not-to-be-missed attraction for architecture aficionados. Alongside the vast selection of second-hand books for sale, there is also an exhibition of rare architectural drawings on display and festive food and drinks – think mince pies and sherry – on sale.

I LOVE SOWETO FESTIVE NIGHT MARKET

The popular spoken word night Poetic Thursdays and the monthly Soweto Art & Craft Fair join forces to present this week-long festive night market celebration hosted in the Soweto Theatre amphitheatre. The festive night market is open every evening with local crafts, fashion and other gifts on sale as well as food and drink stalls while each night sees a different entertainment programme including an open-air kids movie screening on Wed Dec 12, a poetry performance on Thu Dec 13 and a concert by the Soweto String Quartet on Fri Dec 14. A major highlight of the week-long celebration is a day of live music performances on Sat Dec 15 featuring leading Soweto bands like BCUC, Msaki,  Umle and Sun Xa Experiment.

MONTECASINO CHRISTMAS VILLAGE

The outdoor piazza at Montecasino transforms into a bustling European-style holiday market the week before Christmas for the annual Christmas Village. A festive and family-friendly extravaganza, the Montecasino Christmas Village features dozens of arts, crafts and plenty of food and drink vendors, perfect for scouting unique stocking stuffers, festive decor, and delicious festive fare in the late afternoon sunshine.

ROSEBANK CHRISTMAS NIGHT MARKET
The Rosebank Christmas Night Market promises colourful crafts and artworks, with a healthy handful of delicious food stalls thrown into the mix. An alternative to the craze of the mall scene in the festive season, the massive covered space on the Rosebank Mall rooftop accommodates a wide range of talented artists working with myriad materials, from steel to beads, wood and paper, as well as clothing stalls selling fashion made with local African fabrics, second-hand books, records and CD vendors, painters, candle-makers and vintage clothing enthusiasts.
