Enjoy a unique storytelling and dining experience with inner-city tour guides JoburgPlaces, hosted at one of Joburg's most atmospheric heritage venues, the Thunder Walker on Gandhi Square. An evening of fine food and storytelling, these interactive dining events are an opportunity to discover the amazing histories that have shaped Joburg's culture over the past 130 years while feasting on delicious food.

There are two storytelling dinner events to choose from; the Migrant Cuisine Storytelling Dinner and 7-Phases of Joburg Storytelling Dinner. Both led by talented storyteller Charlie Moyo the menu for the evening is an inspired African fusion that represents the broad range of cultures that have influenced the city.

Both dinners start from 18:00 with welcome drinks and the chance to explore the Zwipi Underground Bar, an incredible old Edwardian Bank Vault in the basement of the building, while dinner is served inside the airy triple-story Scatterlings Arcade in the centre of this gorgeous heritage building. After dinner you are also welcome to stay on and get drinks at the bar and soak in the atmosphere (until 23:15).

The Storytelling Dinners take place weekly on Fridays and Saturdays.

As space is limited these dinners often book up so we recommend booking in advance. To book email gerald@joburgplaces.com or a whatsapp to +27 82 894 5216.

The 7-phases of Joburg Storytelling Dinner

This is a more formal, three-course fine dining dinner with a 'global-Afro fusion' menu featuring dishes such as seabass with a fragrant summer herb and citrus salad, pomegranate duck with baby spinach, purple cauliflower and asparagus, and mouth-watering desserts like the mango sorbet, coconut cream and pickled ginger. Accompanying the food is a riveting story of the turbulent 130-year history of Joburg, spotlighting the city's various moments of conflict, resistance, decline and boom and looking forward too to what the next decades of regeneration and growth may bring to Joburg.

The Migrant Cuisine Storytelling Dinner

This storytelling dinner tells the Joburg story through the lens of migration looking at the many different communities who have been drawn to the city since it was founded during the late 19th Century Gold Rush. The influential migrations of early Cape Malay, Indian and Chinese communities, the Mediterranean communities such as the Portuguese, Italian, Balkan and Turkish, as well as the mass movement of peoples from across Africa to the goldfields of Joburg, are all reflected in stories and cuisine with six delicious courses to enjoy. An evening that celebrates the great variety of traditions, ideas, cultures and flavours brought to the city by people from across Africa and the world.

HOW TO BOOK: Storytelling dinners cost R650 per person. To book email gerald@joburgplaces.com or a whatsapp to +27 82 894 5216.
