The Festival of Lights at Joburg ZooThe Festival of Lights at Joburg Zoo will brighten up your festive spirit with its month-long programme of events. Fun for families the zoo's main pathways have been decorated with enchanting displays of light and this year's festival features a range of performers from music artists to ballet dancers, plus a band stage where you can watch live acts, including dancers and singers from the Joburg Theatre and from the Joburg Ballet. This is also a fun opportunity to explore the zoo after hours and see some of the nocturnal animals.
Open daily from 19:00 to 22:00 (except Mondays). Entrance costs R120, R60 kids, kids aged under 3 free. The festival of lights is open until January 5.
Destination Christmas at Melrose ArchYou could hardly find a destination more Christmassy than Melrose Arch this festive season with the upmarket shopping and dining precinct transformed into a Christmas wonderland with the most impressive Christmas illuminations in town. The kids will love wandering through the glow of thousands of Christmas lights in the 'Fantasy Garden' on the Melrose Arch piazza where photo opportunities abound under a festive tunnel of lights that includes life-sized illuminated reindeers, giant teddy bears, Christmas trees, elves and other dazzling illuminations.
Entrance is free. The illuminations are on until January 5.
The Garden of Lights at Emperor's PalaceEmperors Palace's annual Garden of Lights display is always a family favourite. Wander through the glittering gardens decorated with the most colourful and enchanting light displays and pick up food and drinks at the festive market while the kids enjoy the fairground rides and grab a few photos with Santa Claus. The ticket price is for entrance to the Garden of Lights only and does not include funfair rides, food or beverages.
The Garden of Lights is open daily from 19:00 to 22:00. Entrance costs R25. The Garden of Lights is open until January 5.
The Wonderland of Lights at Walter Sisulu National Botanical GardensThe Wonderland of Lights at Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens promises a family-fun Christmas season packed with all that is glittery and festive including gift shopping, carol singing and more than 100 of the most dazzling Christmas illuminations spread over 13 unique themed stages, creating a magical place to celebrate the Christmas spirit. Alongside an 11 Foot Gingerbread Man, an army of Nutcracker Soldiers, Santa's reindeer and a larger than life Christmas grinch, there's also a Frozen themed area complete with fake snow, Santa's Toy Workshop, Santa's Bakery and the super-sweet Candyland plus a Paw Patrol themed kiddies entertainment area and loads of food stalls selling treats from across the globe.
The Wonderlight of Lights is open 08:00-22:00, Sat and Sun 16:00-22:00. Entrance costs R80, pensioners R60, kids R40, kids under 6 free. The Wonderland of lights is open until open until January 5.
