This winter Joburg's historic St John's College, in association with Rand Merchant Bank, presents Kulcha Afrika, a new visual arts festival that celebrates South Africa's vibrant contemporary art scene and the country's rich art heritage.

The inaugural festival exhibition is titled Bunka Kulcha, a reference to the school's vast vault-like Renee England Auditorium that plays host to the event. The name also refers to the exhibition's intentions of highlighting the value of 'outsider' or alternative arts and a resistance to divisive dogma and intolerant attitudes.

All works featured in the exhibition are for sale and rather than grouped thematically, Kulcha Afrika seeks to present each artist individually making for an art event that is filled with a rich array of styles and ideas ranging from collage, sculpture, charcoal drawing and painting to videography, photography and performance.

Major featured artists to look out for include; contemporary sculptors Jake Singer, Amanda-Jade Geldenhuys and Kobus La Grange, fine artist Dathini Mzayiya, art collective Danger Gevaar Ingozi, zine-makers, print artists and illustrators Alphabet Zoo, photographers Byron Berry, Mack Magagane and David Lurie, fabric artist Lawrence Lemaoana, ceramicist Jennifer De Charmoy and interdisciplinary artist Sue Pam Grant.

In addition to the art there's of course plenty of food and wine stalls to choose from plus the unique opportunity to have lunch at The Old Johannian Club restaurant and bar.

Art talks, walkabouts and Edoardo Villa Tours

In addition to the art exhibitions, visitors to Kulcha Afrika can also enjoy some excellent art talks led by the festival's featured artists and the exhibition's curators; academic, writer and cultural theorist Ashraf Jamal and co-founder and creative director of Room Space & Projects Maria Fidel Regueros. The pair will also be leading daily walkabouts of the exhibition.

Another major highlight is the chance to join a remarkable Edoardo Villa Tour, guided by Gerard De Kamper, curator of the University of Pretoria's Art & Ceramic Collection. The Edoardo Villa Tour includes the chance to see iconic works by the modernist sculptor from the St John's College collection, as well as numerous extraordinary pieces currently on loan from private collectors and unique works borrowed from the Edoardo Villa Museum collection in Pretoria.
